Igbo Family and friends Manchester UK.
The Igbo Family and Friends (IFF) charity, has been quite active since inception. We have monthly meetings at Nigeria centre,Appleby House, Platt lane, Rusholme,Manchester M14 5NE.
This is a spacious venue, which provides us, with a medium size hall, meeting rooms, classrooms, a fully functional kitchen, a secure play area and adequate car parking facilities.
We have a Family Day party in the summer ( in August ) and a Christmas party.
Some of our biggest achievements has been our Dance classes* and our Igbo lessons.
All our activities are open to members of the public.
We do run a welfare package for members.
Igbo lessons commenced on the 27th of March 2004. We currently run two sessions. The first session are for the younger ones (3—16 year olds), this starts at 11.00am on Saturday and runs for 1 hour. The second session starts at 12 noon and runs for an additional hour.
Mr Chris is our Igbo tutor and he has proved quite popular with our children. Some parents sit in at some classes, while others stay in the waiting area.
Experience has shown that to sustain, the new acquired Igbo language skills, there is great need to put in some practice at home (easier said than done).
There are many advantages inherent in learning Igbo, namely:
Its an additional language;
It improves communication skills, within the family;
It is of immense help when you visit Nigeria;
We are currently averaging 12 persons in numbers attending Igbo lessons. This language class is open to all and I can say that we do have people with no Igbo lineage bringing in their children for lessons.
The Igbo Family and Friends Association of Manchester, meets on the first Sunday of the month. Our meetings normally commence at 4.00pm prompt.
General meetings take place at Nigeria centre,Appleby House, Platt lane, Rusholme,Manchester M14 5NE.
A member volunteers to provide refreshments at each meeting.
Meetings normally last 2 hours and we hope to provide creche facilities for members who bring their younger ones.
We have a constitution that guides our activities
